Kobayashi Erika’s Journey to Kiryu Tenmangu
Life is full of moments where we go “Ah! Wow!”
I like to take those moments, places, and memories and document them as illustrations on paper. When drawing, I can take those “Ah!” moments and prolong them, and feel as if I am living in that moment. In end, I am able to pile up those feelings inside of me and preserve them.
It is however impossible to draw “time” is it not?
I feel that the “kottoichi” (antique market) is a long accumulation of time that started many years ago.
The various treasures from various locations endure and persevere through various generations and are gathered at this magnificent market, Kiryu. A true miracle.
I purchase a simple house cloth that has been fashioned by sewing together many various old and small pieces of cloth. And now the cloth that sits upon my desk is another piece of time that has become a new friend in my life.
あっ！ って思う瞬間が
普段の生活にあるじゃないですか。
その場所のその瞬間を絵に描き留めているんです。
描いていると、あっ！ っていう瞬間が引き延ばされて、
しばらくのあいだ、そのなかに居られるから。
そうして自分のなかにその瞬間の気持ちが、
きちんと積もっていく感じがして。
時間そのものを描きたいというか。
無理なんですけどね。
骨董市も、遠い昔からの
時間の集積なんだなあって思いました。
それぞれの場所でそれぞれに異なる時間を過ごして、
今日、桐生に集まってるわけでしょ。
もう、ミラクルですよね。
古い小さな端切れを縫い合わせた
雑巾を買いました。
わたしの机の上で、またひとつ、
新しい時間が仲間になりました。
Kiryu Tenmangu Kottoichi – One of the three largest Kantou area antique markets and full of kimonos, old plate wear and dishes, and antique furniture.
The history of each individual item seem to pile up and is very easy to see at this market.
An arrangement of antique furniture from the early 1900s rest upon a vinyl sheet from 2011, and I stand here drawing that special memory and history.
Each piece of furniture exchanged hand to hand time and again, and found its way to this market. This market is truly full of an interesting feeling of “mixture”. Layered generations.

Where you can stop in place and just draw.
The kottoichi is full of items and moments that I desire to put down in illustration.
Miracles that transcend time and place, exceeding human lifespan.
関東３大骨董市の一つ、桐生天満宮骨董市。
着物や器、そしてさびた古道具がたくさんありました。
市の風景のなかでひとつ一つ物の歴史が幾度にも重なっている、そんな部分がたくさん見られた。
さびた古道具は１９００年代辺りの物達、その下にひかれたビニールシートは２０１１年代のもの、そして、その時間の歴史に惹かれイラストを描いている今。
道具はいろんな人の手に渡り,今ここにある。
市のMIX感が、面白い。時代のレイヤード。

あっと思った瞬間を絵に書き留める。
書くことでその場の瞬間立ちとどまる。
普通にみんなあるはず。
立ち止まって、絵を描く時間。
骨董市は書きたいものがたくさんあった。
物は自分で動けない。でも、ここには、人から人へ伝わってきている。
時間を越えて人の人生より永く残り続けるってミラクルですね。
Laundry Kountry
An indigo dyed one piece fashioned from an image of a Hawaiian Lei dress.
Random lighting and shading from the indigo dyed cloth is seen throughout the frills of the dress.
The bow is also dyed indigo and provides a small difference in shade to the entire outfit.
The nail art is indigo colored pottery patterns drawn upon a white background.
The bag is fashioned from an old Japanese “furoshiki” (wrapping cloth) and fastened with a loop and strap purchased in Bali.
The red “geta” (Japanese sandals) were purchased from a previous shooting at a Nagoya antique market.
今回のランドリーカントリー。
ハワイのレイドレスをイメージしたワンピースは藍染めで中色に加工。
フリルの間からはランダムに古布をあみこんで藍の濃淡が見え隠れ。
頭のリボンも藍染めで少し色あせてむらが出ています。
今回のネイルは白地に藍色で陶器の器のような柄づかい。
リュックはかごを大きな日本の風呂敷で包んでとめ具はバリ島で買ってきたバティックのリングを使用。
赤い下駄は名古屋の骨董市で撮影の為に買ってきたもの。
